Syllabus

The syllabus for each class includes:

  • learning about the Muslim belief : particularly belief in Allah (God), and stories of the many Prophets.
  • learning about how to perform Islamic rituals, particularly prayer and fasting, at a level of detail appropriate to their age (for example, the younger ones learn about fasting primarily as an opportunity to do good)
  • learning about appropriate Islamic behaviour, including relationships with family, friends and wider society. This includes taking part in national events: for example, fITRA will be getting children (and parents) involved in Fairtrade fortnight and national collections for charity.
  • learning to read (from Year 1) and understand Suras (chapters from the Qur’an) and Duas (personal prayers).

Teaching and learning

The method of teaching varies according to the age of the children in the class. The youngest children learn through songs, stories, and games and will go home with a relevant picture to colour. The older children learn through stories, team quizzes, pupil presentations, activity sheets, summarizing and, where appropriate, dramatization; they will usually have a small amount of homework each week to reinforce their learning.

Each week, children age 5 and above bring their sura chart to update their progress in memorising chapters; children age 7 through to 10 take home a prayer tree to record the amount of prayers they have managed to do that week.

Special craft activities will take place in Ramadan for the nursery/primary age children, such as making Good Deed calendars, charity collection boxes, and Eid cards.
